Concept for the systematic investigation of aspects of environment, health and acceptance in the field of grid and energy storage expansion

Germany set goals to handle the “Energiewende” and therefore, require the necessary grid infrastructure and energy storage that are both environmentally friendly and accepted by the general public. In order not to jeopardize the objectives of the Federal Government to achieve an energy profile of at least 35% renewable electricity supply by 2020 and 80% renewable electricity supply by 2050, the duration of the planning and approval process (particularly for grid expansion) should be reduced. In order to simultaneously enable increased participation of citizens and established nature conservation standards, the existing knowledge gaps on the environment, health and acceptance aspects must be identified and efficiently degraded.

Thus in a first step, the state of the ongoing research is presented (a meta study of ongoing research projects in the area of ​​monitoring and acceptance research in regards to grid and energy storage expansion). As a second step, the existing gaps in knowledge will be advanced. This should establish a research concept for the Federal Ministry of Environment. In the end of the day the goal is a coordination of the entire research in the field of accompanying research for grid and energy storage expansion, as it is e.g. done in the field of offshore wind energy in the Research at Alpha Ventus (RAVE).

The aim of this concept is to generate timely, implementation-oriented based results and the pool together all of the ever-expanding knowledge. This should be worked in continuous, close coordination with the competent authorities in the Federal Ministry of Environment and thereby also provide support for ministerial work in the field of accompanying research of grid and storage expansion.
